Region 2 | Southwest Aaron Becking | Aaron is a leader in Middle School Phys Ed in Lethbridge. He is a hard working and dedicated to the profession as well as helping develop students Physical literacy and getting students active. Students really like Aaron which causes them to naturally follow him. He is an integral member of the HPEC 2020 planning committee. He has also worked to bring Ever Active schools into his school to assist with developing Physical Literacy amongst students as well as staff members. He has increased sport awareness by bringing in guest speakers and introducing new sport activities into his school. He has worked hard to develop a Spring Basketball program at his school as well as at the Elementary feeder schools. He has helped to develop the Outdoor Education program at his school which promotes off-campus outdoor pursuits. Aaron is heavily involved in coaching and volunteers countless hours towards co-curricular activities and making his school a better more active place. |
Region 3 | Greater Calgary Kendra Harper | Kendra is a teacher who is a life long learner when it comes to education. She has a tremendous passion to improve her skills and share her knowledge with others. Her enthusiasm to share her knowledge has lead her to present at numerous education conferences over the years. She is a very positive, energetic, kind and caring individual who brightens the lives of those around her. Kendra goes out of her way to develop a strong rapport with all of her students. We are very fortunate at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy to have such a gifted teacher. |
Region 4 | Calgary Andrina Boyles | Andrina is a champion of physical education and health for her students. She demonstrates excellence in every endeavour she takes on. Andrina is the first one to volunteer when help is needed no matter how big or small the task is. She graciously volunteers her school for HPEC drive-in workshops, and helps organize and provide assistance whenever needed! Andrina has worked on countless committees, including physical literacy, assessment, report card, as well as many Junior High Athletics Committees including Cross County, Volleyball, Basketball, Wrestling and Track and Field. Andrina is a delight to work with , her energy and enthusiasm for Physical Education is boundless. She welcomes a challenge and makes sure she networks with others in her field to solidify her knowledge. Andrina provides a quality physical education program for her students, ensuring that all students are active and understand the necessity for physical activity. She is an incredible sharer of her time and knowledge and is one of Calgary Catholic's go-to's when it comes to providing assistance in all things Physical Education and health. She has made Physical Literacy a mainstay of her Physical Education program and has provided many workshops for others. Andrina embraces the use of technology in the gym and has assisted everyone who works around her in gaining the same knowledge. Andrina lives what she preaches, taking time to ensure that her friends and family's wellness, along with her own is a priority. Jenn Schoenberger | When it comes to championing health and physical education learning, Jenn is a true leader. She is energetic, organized, kind and professional and gives 100% every time she walks into the gym. She engages all students with her strong sense of fair play, teamwork and effort and every student feels safe and successful in the gym, no matter their skill or confidence level. Jenn works tirelessly to make the learning environment at Olympic Heights the best it can be. She explores many avenues for student engagement, from planning off-campus trips to swimming pools and ski hills, to engaging students in generating rubrics for assessment, to drawing on her instructor certifications to teach yoga and DANCEPL3Y, to knowing when to step back and let the wonder of unstructured play opportunities work their magic! A greatly valued member of her staff, Jenn played an instrumental role in helping her school community appreciate and embrace the four pillars of Comprehensive School Health, the Pillars of Healthy Eating, Mental Health and Physical Health, and the Circle of Courage. She leads assemblies, organizes clubs and special events, supervises intramurals, and leads the Annual Sports Day festivities, complete with 30 stations, at the end of the year. Jenn truly leads by example, and when she isn’t inspiring those around her at school, she and her family make time for physical activity-oriented holidays and participate in a variety of sports, year round. |
Region 7 | Greater Edmonton David van den Bijgaart | David does a lot great things in his PE classes. He has a well developed program that incorporates physical literacy, fitness, cooperation and sport. Not only do the students enjoy PE class for all of the great things they get to experience, like archery, wheelchair basketball and many other great things. They also take their physical activity into the community by running, hiking, biking and shoveling walks in the winter. David is a great PE teacher, that is making a difference with his students. Kylie Rott | Kylie is an excellent role model for young female students. She participants in many school events, she coached many different sports teams. Kylie would be a deserving candidate because she is a passionate physical educator. She dedicates her time to building meaningful relationships with her students in and outside of the classroom. She has contagious energy and positive outlook that she brings to school daily. It is difficult not to laugh, learn, and enjoy life when around Kylie. She is always open to trying new ideas, units, skills, and sports with her PE classes and does not show a fear of failure (even if it might be in her mind). As a colleague she is easy to work with, willing to help on almost any project, and a wealth of knowledge. |
Region 8 | Edmonton Michael Topping | Michael began his journey into physical literacy in 2016 and has been pushing the construct's boundaries in his school and district through leadership and innovative classroom pedagogy ever since. Michael has gone above and beyond with collaboration and professional development in the hopes of creating permissive learning environment that foster physical literacy. His energy and passion are seen in his championing of wellness. Colette Tercier | Colette is a passionate, energetic physical educator at a new K-9 school in Edmonton. On top of the school wide things associated with being a lead teacher, Colette was also responsible for the ordering & set up all of the necessary PE equipment for a K-9 school, as well as planning to teach some of & support all of the K-6 elementary PE program in the fall. This was in addition to organizing all of the school's athletics like transportation of athletes, entering tournaments, obtaining officials when necessary, coaching volleyball plus her teaching assignment of 7-9 PE , Jr. High Health & Life Skills and 7-9 Language Arts. Colette is a member of the Jr. High PE Teachers Community of Practice in her district and she regularly attends whatever District K-9 PE Professional Learning Opportunities she can. She has spent countless hours of her own time meeting after school with the district PE Consultant to discuss things like assessment and program planning for elementary. Collette has been an active HPEC member since her last year of schooling at the UofA. It was there where she was introduced to Drive In Workshops and got the bug to help out. Colette was recruited on the HPEC 2014 Conference Steering Committee in Edmonton and that is where her organizational, collaborative and take charge skills became evident. Her eagerness to learn & help others, combined with her fun loving personality make everyone want to work and/or be around her. There are big things ahead for Colette and PE and HPEC are lucky to have her! Congratulations Colette! |
Region 9 | Central West Amy Wesolowsky | Amy has for several years been a school leader in Health and PE. She has been leading Green Alberta initiatives and Student Wellness Action Teams. Her student groups make presentations at School Board and Parent Council meetings. Her groups have earned recognition and awards for their healthy living promotion efforts beyond our community. She used her talents as a dance fitness instructor to enliven regular school assemblies and after school staff and parent gatherings with zumba. Her energy, enthusiasm and tireless dedication to health and wellness shine through her work on a daily basis. Great work Amy! Timmery Welsh | Timmery is a passionate educator committed to supporting the mental, physical and social well-being of children and youth in Onoway. She is the grade 7 Physical Education Teacher and Wellness Coach for Onoway. Timmery is a member of the school's leadership team in her role as Wellness Coach. This position has allows access to universal, targeted and individualized supports and services to support positive mental health. She provides ongoing professional learning presentations on health and wellness during professional development days, as well as during school embedded collaborative team meetings. She embodies the school health connection, ensuring that all children, staff and families have the supports they need for positive mental and physical health and wellness. Timmery oversees the “Gateway to Wellness” Project: Webs of Support. She coordinates a steering committee to create a staff and parent response for developing children and youth webs of support for the elementary school and the junior senior high. She collaboratively works with child and youth advocate: Derek Peterson. Timmery oversees the elementary school's extracurricular activities and coaches several school sports. She has organized Classroom Champions, connecting students with a Canadian Olympic Athlete. This program reinforces the skills, attitudes and knowledge that Timmery teaches her students every day. Timmery’s passion and commitment to health and wellness is second to none. She is a lifelong learner, excelling in the creation and implementation of health and wellness for Onoway. She is a collaborator, a listener, a connector and innovator. Great work Timmery! |
Region 10 | Northeast Tina Skakun | Tina is our apple schools facilitator for 2 years now. In that time she has opened many opportunities for our students and impacted over 700 students. Tina has dedicated weekends and evenings completing project for our students to have the greatest opportunities in health and physical education. Some of these projects include: building and maintaining the Outdoor Garden/Classroom, Tower Gardens, Don't Walk In The Hallways, Filtered water bottle filling stations, Physical Literacy Recess Bins, supplying water bottles for all students, AMA Youth Run Club, Go Girls Run Club, Dance Club. Everyday Tina shows passion and commitment in our community with regards to health and wellness. Tina also has ran PD for Apple Schools at our local Institute Day and North East Teachers Convention. Tina is caring, empathetic, and selfless when it comes to students education. She runs Family Game Nights for our community throughout the year to connect families and establish cohesion in our community. Ever project Tina is asked to assist with she rarely says no and will dedicate time until the project is completed. The amount of community partners Tina has brought into our school is outstanding. Tina truly deserves the world for all the dedication to the Health and Physical Education Profession. |
Region 11 | Northwest Cameron Macmillan | Cameron has been instrumental in providing the Grande Prairie Catholic District the opportunity to grow in their knowledge of physical literacy. His school is a part of the Physical Literacy in Mentorship Program and currently the Grande Prairie Catholic School District is a part of a District Level Mentorship Program in partnership with Ever Active Schools which Cameron had a part in bringing to our district. Cameron has helped identify schools and individuals who would benefit from this program with the hopes of creating a district wide appreciation for Health and Physical Education. Cameron has been involved in attending many HPEC Conferences as well as promoting teachers to attend these Professional Development opportunities when they arise. Cameron has been the lead person in promoting Health and Physical Education in our district by creating a Physical Literacy Cohort that meets during our district Professional Development Days as well as ensuring many schools bring students to our local Healthy and Active Schools Symposium events. Cameron is always supportive of teachers wanting to include activity permissible learning environments as well as active breaks, recess and lunch within his school and the district. As an Assistant Principal, Cameron sees first hand the benefit of engaged learners through a Physical Literacy lense and continues advocate for health promoting schools on a daily basis. Healthy learners are better learners and Cameron always places that thought first. Cameron is an approachable, knowledge seeking, growth mindset individual who always puts students first and will work to build capacity within his teachers. |
HPEC Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Mark Yurick
Professional development is a cornerstone, if not the foundation, to successfully teach and inspire students in today’s classroom. During Dr. Mark Yurick’s work as a staff officer of the Alberta Teacher’s Association, he had a fierce passion and commitment to the professional learning of teachers across the province, and has been a tireless advocate for the work and success of the HPEC Council. Over the years of his service, Dr. Yurick showed particular attention to supporting the leadership of the HPEC Council, was approachable to the needs of our health and physical education teachers, and
played an intricate role in the successful relationship between the Council and Ever Active Schools.
In addition to the advocacy he provided the HPEC Council, and the affect it had on our members, he worked equally hard in areas of Alberta teacher education and certification, supporting diversity and equity in school communities and provided numerous years to quality professional learning across Alberta. Because of these contributions, and more, to teachers and students in Alberta, it’s without a doubt that Dr. Mark Yurick is a deserving recipient for the HPEC Distinguished Service Award.

Jonathan Mauro
Jonathan is currently enrolled at the University of Alberta, Elementary Education, PhD program under the mentorship of Dr. Doug Gleddie. In 2015, Jonathan completed his Masters Educational Leadership, at the University of Portland. Prior to that, he received his Bachelor of Education, Secondary Focus with a Major in Physical Education and a Minor in Biological Sciences from the University of Alberta in 2007.
Currently Jonathan is a teacher at St. Francis of Assisi Middle School. His current assignment includes: Physical Education Teacher, Outdoor Education Teacher, Co-Teacher for Outdoor Leadership/Resiliency program, Co-Athletic Director, Health Champion and Basketball Coach. Prior to this, Jonathan taught at Ecole Secondaire Notre Dame High School, St. Patrick’s Community School, St. Patrick’s Community School and St. Marguerites School.
Most recently, Jonathan has been a member of the Alberta Education Wellness Curriculum Working Group which gathers teachers from around our province to inform and support the development of the new Health and Physical Education Program of Studies. In addition to this, Jonathan has been an HPEC Executive Member and has held the position of Regional Representative in the Central Region for many years. In this role he provides support and professional development opportunities to colleagues. In 2017 and again in 2019, Jonathan was one of our HPEC Conference Co-chairs for our Annual HPEC Conferences in Jasper and again next year in Red Deer. The dedication to these roles demands exceptional commitment to excellence to the Health and Physical Education community of practice.
In 2010, Jonathan was a recipient of the HPEC Certificate of Commendation (Central Region) which recognizes exceptional Health and Physical Education teachers around the province of Alberta.
Locally, within his school context, he displays efficiencies in Google Classroom to effectively communicate, enhance learning, teaching and assessment with students. His co-leadership supports the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) model at Notre Dame High School.
Regionally, Jonathan works alongside other teachers to bring concepts of experiential education in a cross-curricular approach. He has partnered with Red Deer College to host a number of professional development opportunities in Central Region. One such example includes being a committee member to bring Dr. John Ratey to Red Deer College to present to numerous stakeholders in Central Alberta about the benefits of exercise and the brain.
Provincially, as an HPEC Regional Rep and Co-Chair for the 2017 and 2019 HPEC Conferences, Jonathan has been and continues to be instrumental in the planning and implementation of Quality Health and Physical Education Professional development on a provincial level offering a wide variety of programming to colleagues.
These last few years, Jonathan has demonstrated a strong working relationship with the indigenous community supporting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action in a Physical Education setting. In addition, he has formed a partnership between High School Students working with Kindergarten students to develop their oral language skills through play and physical activity.
In November of 2017, Jonathan reviewed Rookie Rugby teaching resource from Rugby Canada, to be used and promoted by Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada).
Jonathan contributes to his community as a committee member of Central Alberta Physical Literacy and Youth (PLAY) team. He is also part of a partnership between high school students and a long-term care facility to increase the well-being and physical activity of residents. Another is collaborating with Red Deer College students to gain experience working with high school students with disabilities. He is an active member of the Rugby coaching community.
